Local SEO Company in California for Service Businesses

Moha is a local SEO company in California for service businesses in Los Angeles, Orange County, San Jose, Concord, Emeryville, Chino Hills and Manteca. We run the Google Business Profile, the reviews, the city pages, the technical work and the links, and we report on calls and booked jobs rather than rankings. California has more businesses than any state and a population that stopped growing, so every customer you win comes from a competitor.

Thank you. We have your details and will send the audit back shortly.

Where customers find you

Three places California customers find a business, and how our SEO covers each

Someone in Pasadena needs an electrician. They will not scroll, and they will not visit four websites. They look at the three businesses on the map, glance at the results underneath, and increasingly read an AI summary that has already decided for them. Those three surfaces reward different work, and in a market this crowded you cannot afford to be strong on only one.

01 · Local

The Map Pack on Google Maps

Three listings, one map, and the destination of most "near me" searches. Google ranks them on relevance, distance and prominence. In a dense California metro, distance is the cruel one: you can be the better business and still lose to someone four blocks closer. Prominence is the part you can build, and local SEO is how.

02 · Organic

The organic search results

Underneath the map, search engine optimization in the classic sense applies: keyword research, on-page SEO, technical SEO, content and backlinks. Organic traffic is how a Concord business reaches someone searching in Walnut Creek, and it is the only surface where you can outrank a nearer competitor by simply being more useful.

03 · AI answers

AI Overviews and ChatGPT

AI Overviews and assistants such as ChatGPT now answer a large share of questions before anyone clicks. Google states there are no special requirements to appear in AI Overviews: be indexed, be eligible for a snippet, be genuinely helpful. In a saturated market that is good news, because it rewards substance over spend.

What we do

Local SEO services in California, and what each one actually does

Ten services, run by one team every month: local SEO and your Business Profile, keyword research, on-page SEO, technical SEO, content strategy, link building, citations, review management, AI search and reporting. You are not buying a tool or a seat. You are buying the work, and a monthly report of what it produced.

Take one on its own or run several together. Most California businesses begin with local SEO, because in a market where the customer count is not rising, the fastest available gain is converting more of the searches already happening around you.

01

Local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization

The profile is the listing that appears in the Map Pack and on Google Maps, and in California it is also a legal document. State law treats a directory listing as advertising, so the categories you pick are a public claim about the work you are licensed to perform. We choose categories that match both what you want and what you hold, complete every service and attribute, and keep the photos and posts current.

For businesses that travel, we set the service area the way Google allows: up to 20 areas within about two hours' drive, address hidden if customers never visit. In Southern California nearly everything is inside that limit, which makes the interesting question not how far you may go, but how far you can go and still rank.

02

Keyword research for California cities and services

Keyword research tells you where the winnable demand actually is, and in California the answer is rarely the obvious term. Los Angeles has 12.8 million people in its metro and a competitor for every one of them who has been publishing since 2010. San Jose has 1.9 million, some of the most valuable customers in the country, and a field that thinned out when the tech money moved.

The output is a keyword map, the backbone of your SEO strategy, tying every service you offer to the searches that bring buyers rather than browsers, with one primary keyword per page so two of your own pages never compete. In a state where your competitors have been publishing for a decade, picking the right battles is most of the strategy.

03

On-page SEO for service and location pages

On-page SEO makes a page unmistakably about one thing. We write titles, headings and meta descriptions from the keyword map, answer the question in the first sentence, and mark each page up so search engines read it the way a human does.

California punishes thin location pages harder than most states, because the cities sit so close together. Concord and Emeryville are 17 miles apart and Chino Hills is 20 miles from Orange County, so two pages that differ only by name are competing for the same results with each other. Each one has to be built from its own neighborhoods, its own customers and its own jobs.

04

Technical SEO: speed, mobile, crawling and schema

Technical SEO is the part nobody sees and everybody is judged on. Core Web Vitals, mobile layout, indexing, redirects, broken links, sitemaps and structured data decide whether Google can crawl you, understand you and trust you. We measure on real devices rather than a desktop score.

Brands we handle through our franchise and multi location SEO get the most attention here, because California businesses tend to have several locations close together and that is exactly where structured data goes wrong. Each location needs its own LocalBusiness markup pointing at its own profile and its own page, or Google consolidates them and you quietly lose the smaller ones from the Map Pack.

05

Content strategy and content marketing in more than one language

Search engines rank the page that answers the question best, so our content strategy starts from what your customers ask before they buy: what a permit will cost, how long the work takes, whether their insurance covers it. Those answers become service pages, city pages and guides that earn organic traffic and leads.

Language is not an afterthought here. 44.4% of Californians speak a language other than English at home, the highest share of any state we work in, and 27.0% were born outside the United States. We write real pages in the languages your customers use rather than machine translations, and mark them up so the versions support each other.

06

Link building and off-page SEO with California sources

Backlinks remain one of the strongest authority signals, and the useful ones for a local business are local and specific: the trade association you belong to, your city's chamber rather than a statewide body, manufacturer and supplier directories, neighborhood sponsorships, and local press when you have something genuinely newsworthy.

In California there is one link every licensed contractor already owns and most never use: the public license record itself, which customers can look up and which anchors your business to a verifiable identity. We make sure the name and address on it match every citation you have. We do not buy links or use networks that put your site at risk.

Trade and chamber linksManufacturer certificationsLocal pressRisky link review
07

Local citations and NAP consistency

Citations are listings of your business name, address and phone number across directories and data sources. When they disagree, both customers and search engines discount you. We audit and correct them against the name on your state registration, so every listing tells one story.

For licensed trades the license number goes into every directory field that allows one. California law requires it in all forms of advertising, and a number a customer can verify in thirty seconds is one of the cheapest trust signals available to a contractor.

08

Review management

In a market with a million employer businesses, reviews are the fastest way to separate yourself from the three competitors on the same street. We set requests to go out as each job closes, reply to every review in your voice and in the language it was written in, and flag the ones that need you personally.

Reviews that name the neighborhood and the specific job are worth several that say "great service", so the request asks for that. For health care and legal clients no reply ever confirms that a named person is a patient or a client. Review management also runs on its own as a review management service for businesses that already rank and want to convert more of what they get.

AI search optimization for AI Overviews and ChatGPT

Ask an assistant to recommend a roofer in Irvine and it will name two or three without showing a results page at all. Moha is an AI powered digital marketing agency, so this is part of the SEO work rather than an upsell. Nobody has a switch that turns it on, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you a guess.

What an AI answer needs is a business whose facts agree everywhere, pages that answer in the first line, local detail that exists nowhere else, and a reputation it can check. That is the same work that wins the Map Pack, aimed one step further along. One of our clinic clients is quoted inside Google's AI answers.

SEO reporting you can act on

When the market is not growing, the only honest measure of progress is whether you took share. Our reports show calls from Google, direction requests, form fills and booked jobs, split by location, alongside where you sit against the businesses that were beating you when we started.

Rankings and organic traffic appear as the explanation rather than the headline. Every report closes with what we will do next month and why, and when something is not working it says so on the first page.

California markets

Local SEO in California: two clusters, 300 miles of nothing between them

Our seven California markets form two tight groups. In the south, Los Angeles, Orange County and Chino Hills sit within 33 miles of each other. In the north, San Jose, Concord, Emeryville and Manteca are all within 58 miles. Between the two groups the shortest hop is 306 miles, from Los Angeles to San Jose, and the longest is 378, from Orange County to Emeryville.

That geometry produces a problem most states do not have. Google limits a Business Profile's service area to about two hours' drive, and in Southern California almost every one of our cities falls inside that limit for the others. So distance is not the constraint. The constraint is that Google ranks listings partly on proximity to the searcher, which means a Chino Hills business can legitimately list Orange County and still never appear there, while its own two pages quietly compete with each other.

The second difference is more important and nobody else writes it down. California's population fell 0.5% between 2020 and 2025, and four of our six metros lost residents. There is no incoming wave to catch. Every customer you gain in Los Angeles came from a business that had them last year, which makes review velocity, proximity and conversion matter more than publishing volume.

Local SEO in Los Angeles

Population 3,878,704HollywoodVeniceDowntown LA

Los Angeles has 3,878,704 residents and 20,745 fewer than it did in April 2020. Its metro lost 277,043 people over the same four years, more than any metro in the country we work in. That is the whole strategic point of this page: in Los Angeles there is no wave of newcomers to catch, so every customer you gain came from a competitor. Hollywood, Venice and Downtown LA behave like separate cities, and a search from Silver Lake rarely returns the businesses that win in Koreatown. We build LA profiles around the handful of neighborhoods you can actually service well, and fight for share there.

What Google's service area rules mean in practice

  • Up to 20 service areas, listed as cities or ZIP codes, not a radius.
  • About two hours' drive is the outer limit of the whole area.
  • Hide the address if customers never come to you.

For a contractor in Concord, listing Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, Martinez, Lafayette and even Emeryville is entirely reasonable. Listing Fresno is not, and listing Los Angeles is not a strategy, it is a suspension waiting to happen.

The rule that trips up expansion: no virtual offices

Google's guidelines for representing your business require a real location, staffed during business hours. A rented mailbox in a second city does not qualify. California is the state where this temptation is strongest, because the markets are close enough that a second address looks almost honest, and it is also the state where a suspension costs the most, since your reviews go with the listing.

Our page: Los Angeles SEO

The largest market, and the one losing the most people

Los Angeles lost more residents than any metro on any of our state pages. There is no growth to ride, so the entire gain has to come out of a competitor's share. That changes the order of work: reviews and conversion first, content second.

We start by finding the three or four businesses actually taking your calls, then close the gaps that are costing you the click: review count and recency, response time, photos, service completeness and the categories you are not claiming. Content comes after, targeted at neighborhoods rather than the city, since nobody wins "Los Angeles" outright.

Who we work with

SEO for California industries where one customer is worth thousands

SEO pays best where a single job is worth more than a month of marketing, which in California describes most of the trades. Construction has 83,428 small firms with employees and 80.5% of all construction jobs sit inside them, according to the SBA's 2025 California profile. Real estate is unusually large here too, with 52,522 small employers. With a median home value of $734,700, more than double the Texas figure, the jobs attached to those homes are worth more than almost anywhere in the country.

Roofing SEO in California

California roofing demand is driven by the rain season and by fire, not by hail. Homeowners look in autumn, before the first storms, and after any fire season that touched their area. Between those windows the searches are about repairs, inspections and insurance paperwork rather than emergencies. Roofing is a licensed classification in California, which makes the Business Profile category itself a legal claim, and the license number belongs in every advertisement including the website. We build the page around the C-39 work you actually hold, publish before the rain season rather than during it, and make sure reviews name the city, because a roofer in Chino Hills and one in Pomona are fighting over the same three map slots. The quiet season work that pays between rains is laid out on Moha's roofing page.

HVAC SEO in California

California is really two HVAC markets. On the coast, air conditioning is close to optional and the money is in heat pumps, efficiency upgrades and indoor air quality. Inland, in the Inland Empire and the Central Valley, summer is brutal and a failed system is an emergency exactly as it is in Texas. The searches differ accordingly, and so should the pages. A Chino Hills or Manteca business should be built for emergency intent and same day availability. An Emeryville or San Jose business is better served by efficiency, rebates and replacement content. We map the keyword set to the climate the business actually works in rather than to the state. The map side, from emergency hours to service areas, is covered in the map work for heating and cooling firms.

Solar and battery storage SEO in California

This is the clearest example on this page of a market where the old content stopped working. Since April 15, 2023, new customers of the large utilities go onto the net billing tariff rather than the older net metering tariffs, which are closed to new enrollments. Exports to the grid are now credited at what they are worth to the grid, not at the retail rate. That rewrote the customer's question. "How much will I sell back" became "how much can I store and use". Any California solar site still built around net metering is optimizing for a tariff nobody new can join. We rebuild the keyword map around battery storage, self consumption, backup power and payback, and keep the license classification and number correct on every page, because selling solar is contracting work and the advertising rules apply in full.

Law firm SEO in California

Personal injury and family law are the most expensive local categories in the country, and California is the most expensive place to compete in them. A single signed matter can be worth more than a year of marketing, which is why firms here outspend almost every other kind of business and why an organic position is worth so much. Our law firm SEO service goes into the detail. California firms advertise under the State Bar's Rules of Professional Conduct on communications and solicitation, which reach a firm's website and online content. Our law firm SEO keeps one profile per real office, uses the firm's true name without added keywords, and builds practice area and city pages that stay factual and verifiable. Review replies never discuss a matter.

Dental and medical SEO in California

Health care is California's second largest small business industry by employer count, at 102,015 firms with staff, and patients in a dense metro have a dozen credible options within fifteen minutes. The decision usually comes down to recent reviews, an appointment this week, and whether the insurance question is answered before they call. Multi office groups lose the most ranking, and always the same way: one profile carrying several addresses, or treatment pages listing services a given office does not provide. Each location gets its own profile, hours, booking link and page. Where the front desk answers in Spanish, Mandarin, Vietnamese or Tagalog, the pages and review replies should too. No reply we write confirms that a named person is a patient. Moha is also a dental SEO company, and that page covers the privacy rules in full.

Med spa SEO in California

Los Angeles and Orange County are probably the two most competitive med spa markets anywhere, which makes generic treatment pages worthless. Customers compare before and after results, reviews naming a specific treatment, and the credentials of the person holding the device. We build treatment pages with honest descriptions and realistic outcomes, use before and after photography only with written permission, keep each location's service list aligned with what it genuinely offers, and time review requests for when results are actually visible. In this category the fastest gains usually come from conversion rather than ranking: the traffic is often already there.

Only in California

California rules and conditions that shape your SEO

Four things make California different from any other state we work in, and the first one has criminal penalties attached. A local SEO company in California should know all four before it touches your Business Profile.

In California, your Google category is an advertising claim

Two sections of the Business and Professions Code decide how a licensed contractor may appear online. The first is simple: every licensee must include the license number in all forms of advertising, alongside contracts and bids. The second has teeth. Under section 7027.1 it is a misdemeanor to advertise for construction work without holding a valid license in the classification advertised, and the statute's own definition of advertising includes any electronic transmission and any directory listing.

A Google Business Profile category is a directory listing that says what work you solicit. If you hold a C-39 roofing license and add a general contractor or a solar category because it looks good, you are making a claim the statute covers. We map categories and services to the classifications you actually hold, put the license number on the site and in the profile description, and leave the rest alone. This is the one place where an SEO decision and a legal exposure are the same decision.

Business and Professions Code, section 7027.1
"It is a misdemeanor for any person to advertise for construction or work of improvement covered by this chapter unless that person holds a valid license under this chapter in the classification so advertised..."

The section sets a fine of not less than $700 and not more than $1,000, in addition to any other punishment. Its definition of "advertise" expressly covers electronic transmission and directory listings, which is why we treat profile categories as advertising rather than as settings. The number goes in the profile description, never in the business name, because Google requires the name you use in the real world.

More businesses than any state, and fewer people every year

California had 1,029,689 employer establishments in 2023, against 670,878 in Texas and 645,575 in Florida, according to the Census Bureau. Over the same period its population fell 0.5% while Texas grew 8.8% and Florida 8.9%. More competitors, no more customers. That is the defining condition of local search here and almost nobody selling SEO in this state says it out loud.

It has a practical consequence. In a growing market you can win by publishing more and waiting for new households to find you. In California that does not work, because the household you need already has a plumber. The levers that move a flat market are the ones that change a decision at the moment of comparison: review count and recency, response speed, photographs of real work, complete and accurate services, and being physically closer to the searcher than the alternative.

Fire is a condition, not a season

California does not have a storm calendar the way Florida and Texas do. It has a fire year. CAL FIRE's own figures show 5,701 wildland fires and 328,950 acres burned by late September 2026, against a five year average of 7,355 fires and 928,524 acres over the same period. The most destructive fires in the state's recent history started in January, which is exactly when a seasonal plan would have been asleep.

For a contractor, a restoration company, a roofer or an insurance adjuster, that means readiness cannot be scheduled. The services you would offer after a fire have to be on the profile now, the photographs have to exist now, and the hours have to be changeable the same day. Google asks businesses to set special hours for short closures and to mark the business temporarily closed for anything longer than about a week, then to mark it reopened the day you return.

Four languages, not two

44.4% of Californians speak a language other than English at home, the highest share of any state we work in, and 27.0% of the population was born abroad. Unlike Florida and Texas, where that figure is overwhelmingly Spanish, California's is spread across Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Korean, with 17.5% of the state recorded as Asian alone.

That turns language from a translation task into a targeting decision. Orange County's Little Saigon is the largest Vietnamese community in the country, and a business that serves it in Vietnamese is competing in a far emptier search market than one chasing the English head term. We look at which languages your own customers and reviews already use, build real pages in the two or three that matter, and reply to every review in the language it was written in. We never create a second Business Profile for a second language: one business has one profile, and a duplicate puts both at risk.

Worth knowing

Not every California business needs a second language, and almost none needs five. A Manteca contractor selling to new arrivals may do fine in English and Spanish. A dental group in Garden Grove or a law firm in San Jose almost certainly should not stop there. The audit looks at your own reviews, your own call logs and your own search data before we recommend anything.

Replying to reviews, from Google itself

When three competitors sit within a mile of you and all of them have four and a half stars, the replies are what a customer reads next. They are also the part owners skip most often. Questions

California local SEO questions business owners ask

Collected from what owners ask on Quora, in Google's own Business Profile community and on the Local Search Forum, and from the questions people type into Google.

With Moha, local SEO services in California start at $3,000 a month on the Launch plan and $4,800 a month on the Growth plan, with custom pricing for multi location businesses. Cheaper offers exist everywhere. The difference is what happens each month: a few hundred dollars buys listing updates and a report, not keyword research, content, links and review management run together by people who talk to each other.

It is worth more, not less. When the number of customers is fixed, the only way to grow is to be chosen ahead of someone else, and that is precisely what local SEO changes. The calculation is the same as anywhere: if one new customer is worth more than a month of the work, and you can give it a few months, it pays. California job values are unusually high, which is why it tends to pay faster here than the competition would suggest.

Affordable and cheap are not the same thing, and the search data shows people looking for both. Cheap local SEO services in California usually mean a listing sync and a monthly PDF, which in a market with a million employer businesses will not move anything. Affordable means the work pays for itself, and that depends entirely on your job value: at $2,500 a job and a 30% close rate, four extra calls a month covers the Launch plan. If your numbers do not reach that, we will tell you in the audit rather than sell you a smaller package that cannot work.

Global or national SEO tries to rank a page for a search wherever it happens. Local SEO tries to get a business chosen by someone nearby who is ready to call, using different levers: the Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, service areas and pages built around a city rather than a topic. The two have different jobs. In a state this size the difference decides everything, because a customer in Fresno will not scroll past four Fresno businesses to reach one in Sacramento, however good its website is.

A good local SEO company in California researches how your customers search, fixes your site so Google can read and trust it, keeps your Business Profile complete and active, builds reviews, citations and backlinks, publishes content that answers real buying questions, and reports the calls and jobs it produced. The ten services listed above are exactly what we do, every month, for every client.

Profile and citation corrections can show within weeks. Los Angeles, Orange County and the Bay Area are among the most contested local markets in the world and usually need several months of steady reviews, content and links before rankings move substantially. Manteca or Concord can move faster. We report monthly on calls and leads so you can see the direction rather than waiting on one keyword.

Hiring a local SEO company in California starts with proof. Ask for results you can verify, named tool and date range included. Everyone claims to be the best local SEO services company California has, so ignore the claim and check the proof. Ask exactly what happens each month and who does it. Ask who will own your Business Profile, website and analytics. And if they are working with licensed contractors, ask how they decide which Google categories to claim, because in this state a wrong answer is a legal problem and not just a ranking one.

No. They are 306 miles apart, well beyond the two hour service area limit, and Google weighs distance from the searcher. Winning both needs a real, staffed location in each with its own profile and reviews. Within Southern California the answer is different and more subtle: Los Angeles, Orange County and Chino Hills are all close enough to list, but you will still rank best nearest your actual address.

Yes. Hide the address, list up to 20 service areas within about two hours' drive, and you can appear in the Map Pack normally. Proximity still applies, so you rank most easily near your base. In a dense California metro that is the whole game: a service area business three miles from the searcher beats one fifteen miles away far more often than either would like.

They will if they are interchangeable. Concord and Emeryville are 17 miles apart, Chino Hills and Orange County 20, and Google will happily treat near identical pages as duplicates and show only one, sometimes for the wrong city. The fix is substance: different neighborhoods, different services, different reviews and different internal links on each page.

You do, or you should. Your own Google account as primary owner of the profile, the website and the analytics, with the agency added as a manager. That single setting is the difference between changing agencies in an afternoon and rebuilding years of reviews from scratch. Owners on the Local Search Forum regularly describe losing listings held in an agency account. Any agency that needs to be the owner is telling you something.

It vanishes from the Map Pack and your reviews can go with it until it is reinstated. Most suspensions follow a guideline breach: keywords in the business name, an address that is a mailbox rather than a staffed location, or duplicate listings created to cover more cities. California businesses hit the second one most, because the next market is close enough to make a fake address feel reasonable.

Do the basics yourself first, because they are free and they are most of the early gain: a complete profile, a review request after every job, and consistent details everywhere. An SEO consultant fits one defined project, and a local SEO consultant in California is easy to hire by the hour for a migration or an audit. An agency earns its fee when keyword research, content, technical work, links and reviews all have to move together every month across more than one location, and when your own hour is worth more spent on the business.

No one can promise that, because there is no submission and no setting. What we can do is make your business the best supported answer to your customers' questions: facts that agree in every place they appear, pages that answer in the opening line, and reviews that corroborate it. Google's own documentation says there are no special requirements beyond being indexed and genuinely helpful.

No. A guarantee here is a tell: Map Pack results change with where the searcher is standing, so two people on opposite sides of Irvine see different businesses for the same words at the same moment. We guarantee the work and report the outcome that pays you, which is calls and booked jobs.

Yes. Business and Professions Code section 7030.5 requires the license number in all forms of advertising, and section 7027.1 makes it a misdemeanor to advertise for work in a classification you do not hold, with a fine of $700 to $1,000. The statute's definition of advertising covers electronic transmission and directory listings, so we treat your website and your Business Profile as advertising and put the number on both. If you are unsure how a classification applies to your work, ask the board directly.

Not as your main pages. Since April 15, 2023 new customers of the large investor owned utilities go onto the net billing tariff, and the older net metering tariffs are closed to new enrollments. Content built around selling power back at retail rates is answering a question new customers no longer have. Keep a page explaining the change, because people search for it, and move the buying content to storage, self consumption and payback.
